Herefords? Goslings! Mallards

How now brown cow and why are your calves so black?

Normal white faced brown Herefords have been bred with Black Angus to create a black Hereford with an all white face. I don’t know if the owner of this herd has done so with this herd. Some farmers will cross with a Holstein and I think I see some Holstein features in a few of the brood cows.

Here’s a cow that I think has a Holstein appearance in the head and body. The fact that the face isn’t all white makes me think -black and white- Holstein.

Another very good possibility is some of these cows are Kiss groupies. This cow certainly looks like one.

Looks like she’s on grass too.

So the paternity of some of the calves is really up in the air.
Black Angus? Holstein? Gene Simmonds?

Looking at this calf I’m beginning to wonder. Even the eyelashes are a bit extreme. But it’s not just the face makeup that raises suspicions.

It may look like two calves

…but this one looks like it’s rehearsing for the stage.

The calves where not the only babies I spotted along the road today. I almost didn’t get a pic because mom and pop led the babes to high grass. Now these I never expected. It just seems way too early.

This is what I would expect.

For the past two days, a mommy mallard that regularly feeds in my yard has brought her 12 babies — no casualties thus far, but I am holding my breath. So cute! Love your photos!!!

    islandgardener,
I’ll keep my fingers crossed. Between us that might work if you don’t pass out. I hate to say it – people might get the wrong impression of me. But here goes – the little fuzz balls are too cute :)

    I have a strange feeling……
The black calf seems to be a crossbreed of a big cat and a cow.

Angus beef sells for a lot more then regular old herford beef(-: So they probably have an Angus Father(-: But remember….Happy Cows Come From California!!!(-:
We have a lot of those black babies around here…seems to be a trend…
The goose on the nest looks very proud. The Mallard seems to be looking for his mate(-:
I haven’t been out to the reservoir to see if any goslings are around yet but I am sure they are(-: Maybe I will go out this weekend and check(-: I love baby birds!!!!(-:

Gene Simmons claims to have gotten around a bit. Maybe he’s the father of those calves. I heard him say as much about cows once.

This may be the first time I’ve seen a mother goose with her babies.

Kiss groupies! Hah, I am still laughing:-D

    Heather,
Never stop laughing. It’s good for ya.

The frontal view of the cow is quite frightening…. I dont what matador actually feels in the ring… Nice photographs!! ~ bangchik

    bangchik,
I know how I feel towards matadors. I would like to see the bulls win.

I love the cow pictures. I’ve been known to snap a few photos of them. I actually did that yesterday. Koko has been cautiously introducing herself to the longhorn in our pasture. Our goose parents are also out their nervously guarding their brood. Great photography and sense of humor.

    mlc,
I haven’t gotten over my Dairy Days. Still love the cows but don’t miss the work.

But but but… that’s a Canada goose int he photo with the male mallard…. innit? I have trons of mallards in my creek (and under my bird feeders) but haven’t seen any babies yet.

    Monica,
You caught it. – I forgot the ? after Mallards. Now you know why the Male Mallard is so proud.

  9. rosemary Says:

Wonderful photos. The babies so cute.

    rosemary,
All furry babies are cute. Except human, I always thought newborns looked like giant slugs.

  10. peppylady Says:

I don’t know about the black Hereford. But I understand the red ones have some type of eye trouble.

    Mom wait for me.

    Coffee is on.

    peppylady,
I didn’t know Herefords had eye problems. Maybe I shouldn’t get in sight?

Duck…duck…goose! I bet that mallard has quite a reputation after breaking the “goose barrier” (or maybe they’re ostracized for being a bi-species couple?) Or is that bi-order? Bi-phylum? I slept through zoology! :) I miss working with cows too, especially the hard work! I had way more energy then, guess the more you use, the more you have. Now I need a nap…

    Lisa,
I think the goose was easy – A Scarlet Honker.
I miss the cows but not the work. And speaking of naps …zzzzz
