Herefords? Goslings! Mallards
How now brown cow and why are your calves so black?
Normal white faced brown Herefords have been bred with Black Angus to create a black Hereford with an all white face. I don’t know if the owner of this herd has done so with this herd. Some farmers will cross with a Holstein and I think I see some Holstein features in a few of the brood cows.

| Here’s a cow that I think has a Holstein appearance in the head and body. The fact that the face isn’t all white makes me think -black and white- Holstein.
Another very good possibility is some of these cows are Kiss groupies. This cow certainly looks like one. Looks like she’s on grass too. |

So the paternity of some of the calves is really up in the air.
Black Angus? Holstein? Gene Simmonds?
Looking at this calf I’m beginning to wonder. Even the eyelashes are a bit extreme. But it’s not just the face makeup that raises suspicions.
It may look like two calves

…but this one looks like it’s rehearsing for the stage.

The calves where not the only babies I spotted along the road today. I almost didn’t get a pic because mom and pop led the babes to high grass. Now these I never expected. It just seems way too early.

This is what I would expect.

A brooding pair of Mallards. Doesn’t dad look proud.

For the past two days, a mommy mallard that regularly feeds in my yard has brought her 12 babies — no casualties thus far, but I am holding my breath. So cute! Love your photos!!!

I have a strange feeling……
The black calf seems to be a crossbreed of a big cat and a cow.

Angus beef sells for a lot more then regular old herford beef(-: So they probably have an Angus Father(-: But remember….Happy Cows Come From California!!!(-:
We have a lot of those black babies around here…seems to be a trend…
The goose on the nest looks very proud. The Mallard seems to be looking for his mate(-:
I haven’t been out to the reservoir to see if any goslings are around yet but I am sure they are(-: Maybe I will go out this weekend and check(-: I love baby birds!!!!(-:

Gene Simmons claims to have gotten around a bit. Maybe he’s the father of those calves. I heard him say as much about cows once.
This may be the first time I’ve seen a mother goose with her babies.

I love the cow pictures. I’ve been known to snap a few photos of them. I actually did that yesterday. Koko has been cautiously introducing herself to the longhorn in our pasture. Our goose parents are also out their nervously guarding their brood. Great photography and sense of humor.

I don’t know about the black Hereford. But I understand the red ones have some type of eye trouble.
Mom wait for me.
Coffee is on.

Duck…duck…goose! I bet that mallard has quite a reputation after breaking the “goose barrier” (or maybe they’re ostracized for being a bi-species couple?) Or is that bi-order? Bi-phylum? I slept through zoology!
I miss working with cows too, especially the hard work! I had way more energy then, guess the more you use, the more you have. Now I need a nap…
