Link Love – Cold Curse

2009
Mar 23

Let me start with the love first.

I saw quite the unusual sight the other day on CiNdEeS’ GaRdEn blog. You don’t see things like that everyday so I wanted to send people over to take a look for themselves. It’s amazing what some woodpeckers do. Go look at the photos of the ‘nut’ tree then come back to see what I found. I’ve made it easy – her link opens a new window so you can just close her blog when you’re done there.

Holy Tree Trunk of Acorns, Batman!

Back already? OK here’s what I found. It’s obvious woodpeckers act differently over on the left coast than those here in wackyland. Hers go nuts while mine go bananas.

Banana Tree

Now for the Curse. Another regular visitor wanted to see more ice photos. Well he got his wish. After leaving his comment the other day the temps here dropped dramatically. It’s been downright freezing since Benjamin from The Deep Middle stopped by. I’ll post todays icy pics but I’ll leave it to you to go tell him. And while you’re there why not paste this little curse to your comment. Don’t forget to copy it before you go :)

May Penguins and Stars On Ice colonize your garden.

OK Ben here’s your ice pics – you could have had chosen something more Lichen my wishes but I did give you a choice.

Water is still flowing but the cold has put it’s icy fingers on the brook.

I hate to say it but my blogging time is going to be pretty limited from now on. Tiss the season to haul rock, dig in the dirt, bamboozle customers and spread manure. (the last two are actually separate things or are they?) It may take some time to break the posting habit and I hope it doesn’t happen but getting around to replying to comments and visiting everyone that leaves one is going to be a real challenge. When I get home I’ll be lucky to eat before falling to sleep.

It must be Spring – I’m back to work

Oooh, ice pretty. Me likey. In a way I’m glad spring starts a little later here!

    Monica,
Spring isn’t really here but the snow is gone and some places are dry enough to get a head start on. Now is a good time to move sex stones before it gets too hot. (I’ll leave you to wonder the exact definition)

Ben needs to find another hobby and let us get on with some warm weather –May Penguins and Stars On Ice colonize your garden.

That damn wind is unreal and flippin cold. Ya,we know your work season beginth soon and blogs will be shorter, and less often, and yes, we shall miss you but at the same time, we know you’ll visit as much as possible. Keep smiling John, life’s a sunny beach!

    bamapat,
Ben is OK – I think all that corn in Nebraska gets to him. Huskers need a better hobby.

It’s amazing how much time I’ve spent ‘blogging’. But it’s still much better than plopping down in front of the TV and having your brain sucked out. Life’s a sunny beach alright that’s why I enjoy my autumn years so much.

I love the banana in the tree(-: Watch out for the monkeys now!

I looked online at acorn woodpeckers and they have a lot of info on them. That tree still amazes me.

    cindee,
You saying I shouldn’t look in a mirror?

Yea, that was some nut tree. I never saw anything like that. I like the sapsuckers around here. Last year a smart one used our metal mailbox for it’s territorial drumming.

  4. rainfield Says:

I am seeing a woodpecker of your size, but why it was such an ugly piece of banana? I am much interested in your last sentence, are you back from hibernation?

    rainfield,
Yep, I’m awake now and out and about. I’ll keep my work days short for a while as I toughen up, after a winter of sitting in front of the computer I’ve gotten pretty bloggy.

  5. Ratty Says:

That must have been a big woodpecker. Where do you think he found the banana?

    Ratty,
Hard to tell how big a bird. We have several types of peckerheads around here. Most are small robin to blackbird size and the bigger Pileated Woodpecker. Which one pecked out that hole – I don’t know.

I admit I put the banana there. It was an accident when I leaned my head against the tree and it got pulled out of my ear.

  6. Benjamin Says:

I don’t like corn. I do like ice–it reminds me of my youth growing up in Minnesota. Here in Nebraska it’s just brown and wind, with the occasional small snowfall. If anything all my writing students make me go nuts. I mean acorn. Cool shots Mr. WA–those frozen rhythms are neat.

    Benjamin,
I figured that might have been my last chance to get photos like this season. I feel for ya. All that corn and students too. So when I came across the ice I thought it would be nice to send it your way.

I love the banana in the woodpecker hole… made me laugh! The ice makes me wanna cry just because it looks like the ice here. We’re currently sitting at -6F with the wind howling. The photos of the ice are stunning though!! I hope you can find a little bit of energy every now and then to blog! I’m just getting back into it … or at least trying!!

  8. Digital Flower Says:

That last round of temps was really cold. Not a great way to start the season.

I hear ya about getting back to work. We have only had a couple little cutbacks so I still have hope for this year.

    Digital Flower,
At least it’s warmed up again. But the warm – cold is too be expected here until May.

Hope you have a good year. Mine looks better than ever.

  9. Grammy Says:

Wow, how amazing was the collection of nuts over there. I will now have to look at dead trees to find me some bananas. LOL love it. I would never request snow. Or ice. Other than in my drink. We had tuns of rain today. So I did not get into the boat to get to the car. I stayed in today.
Hope you have lots of sun shine to post tomorrow.

    Grammy,
Just wait. A woodpecker is working on a pumpkin tree in the yard now.

I think ice season has just about had it. At least I’ve had it with ice.

  10. Susan Says:

Amazing ice pictures!… now you only need this to complete the view:
” May Penguins and Stars On Ice colonize your garden”… ;)

    Susan,
I have a few more icy pics but I’m getting tired of them. After a long winter I’m hoping to see Lawrence of Arabia ride through the yard :)
