Moss Ball

2009
Apr 13

What better to do than wander around in the woods on a holiday? I don’t know, that’s why I spent a good part of the day doing just that. In my wanderings I came across a ball of moss. It really stood out from a distance and drew me to it.

White Cushion Moss – Leucobryum glaucum

Growing among other mosses on a decaying log the silvery green color catches the eye.

This moss requires shade and moisture and grows in moist woods. White Cushion Moss will also grow as thick mat. To reproduce, white cushion moss sends up tiny stalks (sporophytes) in the fall.

Parts of the moss lack chlorophyll giving it the silver-white appearance.

All in all it was a good day. I didn’t expect to find another moss so easily identified. I’m not sure what to post next, my ‘big’ find of a huge area covered in Wild Leeks or my tiny discovery of an Owl Pellet with skull and bones embedded in it. Then again it just might be stone since I need to adjust some sandstone slabs tomorrow. With the coming of spring I’m getting overwhelmed with subjects I want to post. I may have to make multiple posts daily just to keep up with my camera.

I like the moss ball but definitely, post the owl ball with the tiny bone fragments in it. I learned about those in the 6th grade and they are actually interesting. Those with mouse issues can appreciate a post about an owl’s diet.

    Heather,
Thanks for picking my post. I posted the pellet photo for ya. I had to dissect a frog and still have issues about it.

That is really cool! You find some great stuff just wandering around in the woods(-:
    I want to see the owl pellet too(-: I still have the great horned creatures in the pine tree on their nest. I check them twice or three times a day to see if any hatched yet. They are keeping it a secret so far(-;

    cindee,
Yea, I’m going to have to open another bank account. It’s getting to the point my balls of lint, moss and string aren’t fully insured. I just hope i can find another bank willing to pay interest on my deposits.

I haven’t seen any owls but did find another pellet today. I brought them both home and someday I’ll take them apart to see if I can put the skeleton back together.

The moth ball is so cute! I spent Easter doing more rounds of visiting parks! And having pizza. But that’s another story altogether.

    Monica,
    Aw, a snuggle moss.
I had a couple of leeks then went home and ate ham.

I missed where we were voting on showing the owl pellet…can you see my hand raised in a yes vote! gail

    Gail,
I don’t understand why people think I run some sort of democracy. You don’t get to vote for something you want – you have to ask for it.

The owl pellet pic is now posted. You can thank the owl that coughed it up.

Love looking at moss and lichen…. but, oh dear, another wonderful cat! I’m feeling beyond envy about everyone’s feline friends, as I no longer have lovely Lun with me. And I do understand about the COLD. I lived with it for most of my life. I hope folks do not tune me out when I post about spring scenes here in Northern Cal. Cheers, Alice

    Alice,
I do too – it’s trying to identify them that makes me crazy. Sometimes I think I’d be better off watching the refrigerator.

Itty Bitty is a pest. A cute lovable fur baby but still a pest :) It’s never too late to get a kitten. Guess that’s why we’ve had up to 10 cats at once.

I don’t know anybody who resents someone who has heat. We look at you as a possible ‘get away’ from the cold. If you don’t believe me try inviting me over come Jan.

The moss ball is very cool. It’s just begging to be petted.

    bughunter99,
Come to think of it they would make nice pets.

    Very pretty!

    Lisa,
I’ll have to assume you’re seeing a reflection on your monitor.

  8. Lisa Says:

LOL! Seriously, I was referring to the moss. :)

    Lisa,
    :)
