Snow White – Milk White

2009
Feb 19

Your choice. Put a pair of cute cats on your desktop or go with the fungus.

Milk White Toothed Polypore – Irpex lacteus

This toothed fungus forms a crust like mass on dead deciduous wood. This annual turns yellowish as it dries but I was lucky to find this one still somewhat white.

Personally I’d go with the kitties.

Hi Silly, I like them both, but find the fungus particularly fascinating. It has an icy look to it. What is the two sided brush thing by the cats? The one with duct tape so attractively wrapped in an artful manner.
    Frances :-)
    (trying to make amends)

    Frances,
Thanks, fascinating fungus sounds like a good title for a post for those I can’t identify.

The brush thing was originally a home made chimney cleaner. Since then it’s become a pain in the arse obstructing a number of good kitty photos. It has potential of becoming a work of art if you’d be interested in buying it.

The fungus may be the winter coat for the dead wood, but why a piece of dead wood entitles a special treatment from the Mother Nature?

    rainfield,
What I’d like to know is why she doesn’t give me a winter hat. There’s more than enough dead wood to put under one.

  3. bamapat Says:

You can keep both, nice photos tho. Okay, what’s the story on the library tickets? I mean, we would like to buy some or if nothing else donate to the Morely Library, how or whom should we contact?

    Thanks John….

    bamapat,
I’ll get back to you on Saturday when I’ll have a chance to pick up some tickets (at the Morley library). I was hoping by now to get a list of places where they are available but so far the list is pretty much non-existent.

  4. Leo Says:

It makes more sense to go with the fungus. Someone may find a use for it some day.

    Leo,
It won’t be me. I can’t get my teeth into it.

  5. Aiyana Says:

I can do without the cats, but the fungus photo is very interesting to ponder.
    Aiyana

    Aiyana,
Poor kitties, seems everyone would rather pick a fungus over them :)

Now I’m thinking I should go start a pet fungus business.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to work my very photogenic cats into a blog post…you did it with great aplomb.

2 things: first I vote for the cats because you said the fungus is pretty tough at this point. And second, several toothed fungi are delicious. Is this one more tender earlier in the season? Do you know if it’s edible?

    Ellen,
How about a cat tail post?

This is not an edible mushroom, at least according to the field guides I’ve seen. No one mentions the P word so it is probably non-toxic. Unlike other ‘meaty’ toothed fungus this one is not much more than a leathery skin that’s hard to peel off.

  7. HoneyB Says:

Yeah, I’d go with the kitties too.

oh, I just realized….I’m in the minority….oh well, nothing wrong with that!

    HoneyB,
Maybe the tide has turned. The last two nods have gone to the cats.

  8. Ratty Says:

I’ll go with the cats. I’m not much of a cat person, but I still like ‘em. The fungus is cool, but the white cats are beautiful.

    Ratty,
I understand. I imagine they go into stalking mode when they see you :)

  9. Giddy Says:

Well, being a cat person with two black cats, I’ll opt for the cat photo! I see lots of fungi around here and it doesn’t hold much fascination for me. If I can’t eat it, I’m not interested.

    Giddy,
    So you eat cats?

You might keep your eye out for some edible mushrooms this year. Some people swear Morels and Shaggy Manes are great eating. I beg to differ and think cats are better.

  10. Layanee Says:

Love the cats and love that fungus…sponge like!

    Layanee,
Now there’s an idea. Forget the pet fungus, I think these would make a better ‘Loofah’ for the bath. They’d make a good back scrubber when dried and they’re already mounted on a hardwood handle.

  11. kerri Says:

I’m glad I looked back far enough to find these lovely cats. You know I’m going to choose those pretty white kitties over fungus any day. It’s a great picture, even with the arty chimney brush :)
And the fungus pic is neat too.
As for eating a toothed fungus (even if this one was edible)…it looks far too much like tripe for me. Ugh! Just say no!

    kerri,
Hooray, the cats take the lead.

I’m with ya there on the fungus eating. No way would I put something that looks like it grew in my ears into my mouth.
