Trillium Berry

Trilliums are known for the number 3. Leaves, flower petals and sepals come in 3s while stamens come in 6. But there is one thing that doesn’t come in 3s and that is the berry. Only a single berry is produced.
Trillium flowers are either white, pink or reddish but all the berries are red. I found this plant on August 14th, 2008. I kept looking for more but never found another. I can’t say they’re rare but this is the first and only Trillium berry I’ve ever found.
Without seeing the flower I have no idea what variety of Trillium this is. My guess is it’s a Large-flowered Trillium – Trillium grandiflorum – since I did notice a large number of them in the area in the spring. The habitat is right – rich woods with neutral pH soil.

Now that the growing season is over I’m going to have plenty of time to go through all the photos I took during the past months. I won’t give up taking new photos but the wildflowers are a thing of the past right now so now I can think of getting beyond the ‘details’ of nature and look at the general landscapes in the area.
