Turkey Tracks

Turkey Tracks      Turkey tracks
… make a pretty thin soup
… and no those aren’t my footprints

But I did get sidetracked again. I was going to post frozen river pics but I needed to get these out of my way first. Since I didn’t get enough pics for individual posts I’m going to lump all these bird photos together.

As soon as I got outside I was greeted by a couple of chickadees. Unfortunately the dog was with me and the little chirpy balls of feathers didn’t like the looks of Pookey. I managed to get two quick photos. The first isn’t much more than proof I saw a chickadee.

Chickadee

The second caught the chickadee in flight. I posted it only because I wanted to title it.

Now back to the Turkey Tracks. I spotted them as soon as I hit the woods and decided to follow them in the hopes I’d get a chance to photograph them. No such luck. They eluded me which was no surprise. But I was lead to some other other birds that I would have otherwise missed if I headed straight to the river.

Cedar Waxwings

These are even better than the photos I took the other day.

>Cedar Waxwings

Busy eating the fruit of last season they didn’t mind my presence at all. Or maybe it was because they were at least 40 feet out of my reach.

First Robin or Last?

It’s the last robin. (I’ve seen so far) Contrary to what many people believe not all Robins migrate south for the winter. As long as there is enough food available some will stick around through the winter.

Downy Woodpecker

Woodpeckers are not the most cooperative birds around. They have a habit of hiding on the other side of the tree as soon as they notice me. I only got one shot and of course I didn’t catch the red on it’s head that would make identification a sure thing. As my grandfather would have said – damn peckerhead.

Downy Woodpecker

OK – that’s it. Tomorrow I’ll get to the ice jams on the river. Two posts in one day is enough don’t you think?

This is a good biology class. Today topic is on identification of bird. Ha ha..
Very long time ago, I used to take snack which brand icon is a cartoon chickadee. Now I know it is a bird.
    What a ignorance.

    Rainfield,
I try to identify everything I post, it’s my hobby. Hopefully it helps others if they are looking to ID the same thing and happen to stumble across my site.

Hi Billy, I love your bird shots. The cedar waxwings are my favorite birds, or maybe bluebirds, let’s call it a tie for first. You have captured them beautifully.

My blog, Fairegarden is now hosted by wordpress rather than blogger. I moved last September. So nice to see you there. :-)

    Frances,
That must be a typo and you meant Silly. My name is neither but I’ll answer to the latter.

I hate to pick a favorite but if I had to one of my first choices would be the Great Blue Heron. Ask my stomach and I’d have to say chicken.

OK now I am confused. I could have sworn I was at your blog before you switched but I never started making the rounds until October or November last year. Maybe I have you confused with someone else with a VERY similar title. I’ll have to return and rummage some more and see if anything grabs me.

Great photos! Grumpy wants me to tell you he’ll be over your way come Turkey season. ;o)

    HoneyB,
I’m afraid you’ll have to tell Grumpy he shouldn’t look to hunt turkeys here. They pretty much stay on posted land and only rarely wander on to mine. But deer is another story. My son-in-law thinks this is his private preserve but I have a different opinion :)

  4. HoneyB Says:

Hmm, he’ll be there come deer season. ;o)

I just saw your deer post and don’t know how I missed that one..am going back for a better look and read….

    HoneyB,
Grumpy just needs to drive by around dusk and he should run into a couple :)

I was sneaky and posted twice in one day.

That chickadee fan dance picture may be my favorite of the bunch. They’re all good, but it’s hard to capture motion like that. I’ve figured out an easier way to get bird pictures than I knew before, but they’re hiding from me now.

    Ratty,
That shot was far from planned. The little seed eater took flight just as I was pushing the shutter button. The pic came out only because it was still in the focus range. – Here it’s the opposite, after seeing nary a bird all winter they’ve suddenly starting hanging around the house.

Hi Silly, I am mortified, but do make many typos, so maybe can get by with that excuse. Do forgive me, the link is fixed too.
    Frances

    Frances,
Hey mortified, no excuse is needed and there’s nothing for me to forgive. You did after all have the correct address, only my name had been changed to protect the guilty. If anyone needs to forgive you it’s the people that end up here :)

Thanx. Great pics. The chickadee fan dance is my wallpaper for a while.

(not sure I truly dare to comment 8)

I’m glad you like it. It wasn’t really sized to be a wallpaper at 620px but if it works for ya you’re welcome to use it. If you would like a larger size don’t be afraid to ask.

Why? afraid I’ll track ya down and do a fan dance myself :)
