Turkeys in the Yard

2009
Mar 18

This time it wasn’t my friends but rather a wild turkey foraging party.

While getting my first cup of coffee this morning I looked out the kitchen window and saw some Turkeys in the yard. They were ‘cleaning’ up corn fed to the chickens we raised last year. I tried to sneak out to get some photos but the turkeys are far more wary than I am stealthy. Before I had a chance to focus in on them they were on the move.

No, I didn’t set the clothesline crooked. Our first snow came before Halloween and it was wet and heavy and took out a section of the maple tree which landed on the line.

Not the best of photos but these are the best closeups of Turkeys I’ve managed to take so far.

Someday one is going to hold still long enough for me to get a good shot.

Maybe I should invite the turkeys to dinner. I still have some leftover corn from last year and hopefully if the pickings are too good to be true they’ll be too busy to notice me.

How’s that again? To dinner, or for dinner!

    Leo,
If it’s dressed for dinner we’ll host a roast.

Bait is always a good thing. I’ve been planning on leaving some snacks out for the black squirrels, but it will be by the neighbors house.

    Ratty,
I’m wondering what test strength line I should use on my fishing pole.

I know there are Black Squirrels around but I’ve yet to see one. I see you got lucky and got some photos of one in the woods the other day.

You have a good barbecue site. No problem for the dinner.

    rainfield,
I’m feeling a little medieval so I think I’ll just boil one in oil in a deep fat fryer.

OK, I’m just going to say it. Turkeys are weird looking! But it is cool to see them; I’ve never seen a wild turkey. Mallards do the vacuuming function (picking up leftover seeds/seed casings) in my yard!

    Monica,
Yep, turkeys are weird looking until dressed and ready for dinner.

Pray you never have a flock of turkeys ‘vacuum’ your garden. What they don’t eat outright they’ll peck to death. The aftermath of a visit will leave a garden looking like a WW1 battlefield.
