Turtle Crossing

I was hoping to post sooner but I got held up on my way home.

Turtle Crossing Sign

I ended up waiting 12 hours for the turtle to finish darting across the road.

Roadside Turtle
Hell no, I’m not sticking my neck out to look both ways.

Painted Turtle – Chrysemys picta

Painted Turtle
She was actually digging a nest in the sandy shoulder of the road.

I was surprised to see the new road signs nearby. Turtles do cross the road in the area but I’d bet I’ve seen more people stopped in front of the new sign than I’ve seen turtles crossing. I know I almost pulled over the first time I saw it. There’s something about getting so used to seeing all the Deer Crossing signs in what seems to be every 50 feet around here and then coming across something so different that the brain can’t believe what the eyes saw.

Traffic Udderly Stopped
Cow Crossing
Yes, we let our dogs drive around here.
If God didn’t want dogs to drive, He wouldn’t have created automatic transmissions.

I can see why it took so long for you to get home. While the turtles zipped across the road, the cows clogged up everything. They are like that, you know.

I have one to top the cows in the roads. I will post it in the next day or so. Only in Idaho. At least happy cows are in California, right?

  3. Heather Says:

You do win for Turtle crossing, though. Very cool to have them so close! Unless they cause a traffic jam, then around here they are taken off the endangered species list. (Wolf joke, sorry)

I love that turtle crossing sign. And you got to actually see a turtle in the area. Those cows look like they were slower than turtles.

We have turtles crossing the road here but no signs on our property. I guess I will need to post some signs so people can stop for them…LOL That is pretty funny.
The cows we also have. Hope you didn’t hit to many cow pies driving through!(-:

Turtle’s shell must be strong enough to handle your truck. The sign is intended for the dog driver, do not turn turtle on top of a turtle.

That’s a great reason for not posting sooner. The best excuse I’ve seen and it made me laugh. I like things that make me laugh!!

Our nearest neighbors on both sides of our road share ponds directly across from each other. There is a duck crossing sign but unfortunately no one seems to notice it. Poor ducks.

Have you ever tried to sneak up on a swamp turtle sunning itself? Turtles can move faster than you think. We see them through a telescope off the deck sometimes. They go in the water before a walking person can even see them I think.

Living here in greater Detroit, I can confirm that automatic transmissions were in fact designed specifically so that dogs can indeed drive them. We’re working on a new electronic/navigation contraption (watch the market!) that allows two little dogs to work in tandem–one at the pedals and one at the steering wheel. Also, painted turtles are so pretty–one tried digging her nest in my backyard one year (I live maybe 10 feet from a creek) but my heavy clay-y soil seemed to deter her being able to dig deep enough for the eggs. Still, I felt honored she gave it a try.

It looks like it slow pace of life where you live.

    Coffee is on.

Very funny post and great photos. I love the one with the dog and the cows. Your turtle closeup is really nice, too.

Hooray for the turtles. We don’t have signs but I’ve seen them crossing the roads around here. Once we scooped a smallish snapper off the road with some brand new dinner plates in fact! The other day I passed what looked one that didn’t get so lucky. Didn’t stop since, if I’d been right, it would have been too sad to see. Let’s hope the cars are slow when those eggs hatch!

Have a care! Your truck might be trampled by the turtles next time!

Love the turtle crossing sign…could work around here. Funny, I saved three turtled this week…a box turtle on a country road…a tiny baby diamondback terrapin out of the jaws of a hungry seagull, and an adult of the same species! Things do come in 3s! Not many cows here, just horses!

I love that painted turtle digging in the sand. So cute. I was given two baby turtles last year. I placed them in my pond but haven’t seen them this year. I wonder if they just left but my yard is fenced. It’s a mystery.
