Winter Scenes from a Roadside Perspective

In other words I got outside today but was to lazy to hike anywhere. I drove around instead and took some winter photographs from different roadside locations.

Cat Tails in Snow

I have to say I’m very happy with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28. Using the 18x zoom is allowing me to get photos I never could with my old 3x camera. The quality is a bit rough but when I consider my shaky hands and the distance I think they come out pretty good. No way would any of these bird photos be worth displaying without the zoom. They would just look like black dots in the landscape.

    Dear Mr. WiseA**
Now isn’t it lovely to have such a nice zoom ? .. I have an 18 x one too plus a “shaky hands” button .. I kid you not ! .. Canon now has one for 20 x optical zoom .. I think in 10 MP .. it does make me yearn a little : )
Love the shot of the tree leaning into the river .. the turkey(s) .. of course the cats in the snow and if I didn’t mention a particular shine to the Canada Goose … well, I wouldn’t be Canadian EH ?
There is a lot to be said about the comfort of shooting from inside your truck : )
My shots of the trees on Fort Henry hill … well my hands still don’t forgive me that ! haha
    Very nice pictures indeed !

    Joy,
My camera is 10 MP so compare the 2 if you do go shopping. 2x isn’t that much difference – remember it’s the lens that counts more than MP.

Come visit and I’ll give you a goose.

Great photo shots. Love that last one!

    HoneyB,
Thanks, glad you liked it. I thought it was OK for a quick blog job.

    Wonderful photos!

(thanks for the heads up on the link…I think it is right now)

    Debbie,
Hopefully I’ll get some better ones today. It might be a pain to carry around a tripod but I’m hoping a steady base will improve the image quality.

Wish I mentioned it sooner but I kept forgetting.

Hi glad to see your out and about a bit. I l have never seen a turkey in flight. Only in a flock or single on the road side. I’m glad you got the shot.

    Grammy,
I have a bad case of Cabin Fever now that I’ve recovered from the Zombie Flu. I had to get outside before I hurt myself from bouncing off the walls.

That was a lucky shot. As soon as I pulled over the closest one to the road panicked and started to fly which set off the rest of the flock. I’m glad I turned on the camera before I approached. All I had time for was a point and shoot.

  5. Rainfield Says:

Wow!! Is an eye opener to see turkeys flying. My imagination is only linked to turkeys which are fed for the size to occupy the dining table.

    Rainfield,
Hopefully someday I’ll find a flock roosting. It’s a big surprise for a lot of people since most don’t realize turkeys will settle in a tree for the night.

  6. Ratty Says:

I sometimes take some of my pictures from my truck too. I agree with Rainfield, I like the flying turkeys too. I’ve chased chickens that flew away from me like that. I was going to say something about one of the other photos, but they’re all some of my favorite type of things, so guess I’ll just say I like them all.

    Ratty,
Chasing chickens – you little weasel :) We kept ours caged so we didn’t have to chase them. Now they’re in the freezer.

Flattery will get you nowhere. But it will get me to visit ya :)

Wow, you truly are getting some great shots and hey, it’s not all due to the camera, the operator plays a major role here too.

Loved the flying turkeys, that is a hard shot to get..I know, I’ve tried.

    Enjoy and keep snapping away…

    bamapat,
My secret – take 100 photos and hope one comes out. Then take the one and crop the junk out of it.

It looks like the sky is going to clear today and the temps stay decent so I’ll be doing a little more snapping. I should head to Stone Valley and see what the Raquette River looks like.

It amazing how geese sure seem to be comfort in the snow.
I guess there down is just the ticket.

    Coffee is on.

    peppylady,
Someday I should tell the story how I lived in a Tepee one winter and used a good down sleeping bag to keep me warm in subzero temps. Now I wish I had the same type of circulation in my feet so they’d stay warm.

  9. Lisa Says:

GREAT shots, especially the goose! Very nice of you to offer them to folks as desktop backgrounds and such.

    Lisa,
I’m lucky to give them away. I get all the fun and satisfaction of getting a lucky shot and everyone else gets a chance to be jealous.
